Metallurgical testing of samples detects surface and internal defects, reveals the microstructure and macrostructure of materials and determines conformance to required specifications.
The laboratory engineers also perform failure analysis to provide insight into the cause of material failures, when performance does not meet expectations.
The Laboratory is equipped with an Optical microscope along with a Biovis MP 2000 Image Analysis system that is capable of analysing microstructures from 50x to 1000x magnifications.
The laboratory is equipped to carry out tests to determine
- Microstructure
- Macrostructure
- Carburization & Decarburization
- Grain Size (ASTM E112)
- Inclusion Rating (ASTM E45)
- Plating Thickness
- Carbide Precipitation
- Ferrite by Point Count (ASTM E562)
- Nodularity, Nodule Count
- Intergranular Attack & Oxidation
- Intergranular corrosion (IGC) tests on austenitic/ferritic stainless steels
- Salt Spray Tests
